UNDSS ETB First Responder Course 2013

General
The Emergency Trauma Bag training based on need identified in SRA and endorsed by SMT was conducted 21-25 Jan at MTB, in Jakarta. The course with 22 out of an expected 24 attendees, attracted participants from 6 agencies and UNDSS; (WB, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNDP, UNAIDS and UNOCHA). The training was opened by CSA, Robert Adolph and was conducted by Mr. Russell Wyper, UNDSS Training Officer assigned to UNON.

ETB training is an essential life-saving training which has been standarized for use by all UN Professional Field Security Officers and it has been established as an essential operational requirement for all security officers.

Purpose

The primary purpose of the ETB training in Indonesia was to ensure security officers, other select staff occupying UN facilities in Jakarta and areas outside of Jakarta are adequately trained to provide first response emergency medical treatment to UN personnel who might sustain a trauma or other serious injury. In the case of Indonesia this could include earthquake and building collapse that might affect other parts of the population and result in medical services being dispersed or unavailable initially. Staff attending training were drawn from Jakarta, Ambon, Banda Aceh, Kupang, Makassar and Bali.

Training Methodology

Training consisted of theory and extensive practical application on all procedures and techniques required to support victims of trauma injuries and included:
   a. Written pre-test
   b. Theoretical and practical demonstrations
   c. Practical hands-on application of training
   d. Written final test

All staff who successfully completed the training are now capable of effectively using the ETB and in exceptional circumstances to stabilize a victim of trauma or acute medical condition, as approved by a qualified medical officer.

Completion
On 25 Jan, 20 of the 22 participants were provided with certificates as having satisfactorily completed the Department of Safety and Security’s Emergency Trauma Bag First Responder Course including Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. Participants are equipped to respond/support staff who are victims of trauma injury in the work place.
